The News Media and Legislature Do Not Know the Definition of an Assault Rifle

Here is a video by a San Jose Police Officer that accurately shows the difference between semi-automatic firearms and true assault weapons.  Officer Leroy Pyle demonstrates the facts about semi-automatic firearms.

This is one of the best videos that I have seen that just portrays the facts.  Here are some highlights of the video:

  • At 3:37 Officer Pyle demonstrates the difference between fully-automatic and semi-automatic.
  • At 5:56 he takes a legal semiautomatic rifle and in less than two minutes by just replacing the wood stock with a plastic stock, it looks menacing to the uninformed.
  • Even Edward Conroy of the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told a U.S. Senate Subcommittee that they would have a very hard time of drafting a law  separating the difference of technologically identical rifles into those that look different.  He explains this at 8:26 in the video.
  • Detective Jimmy Trahin of the Los Angeles Police Department blew away the lies that semi-automatic firearms can readily be converted to fully-automatic weapons.  At 9:33 in the video Detective Trahin testified before the California State Assembly and stated that with over 50,000 firearms seized from criminals (including gangs and drug dealers) not one firearm was found to be converted from semi-automatic to a fully-automatic firearm – not a single one!

Officer Leroy Pyle sums up “It would really be a shame if you legislated against that technology and it would be really sad if that legislation was as a result of just some confusion and misunderstanding and especially by mislabeling.”  The California and the United States Legislature should rely on factual testimony rather than the inflamed rhetoric of anti-gun zealots.
